Circumcision (for Adolescent and Adults)

What is circumcision?

During circumcision, the foreskin that covers the head (glans) of the penis is removed. This practice is typically carried out on infants shortly after birth, and it originated as a religious ritual. In contemporary times, circumcision was performed for a range of reasons, including religious or medical purposes, as well as cultural traditions.

Circumcision is commonly performed on male infants within the first week of life, while it's less frequent for adults.

When is circumcision done?

In some instances, circumcision may be suggested for medical purposes, particularly when the foreskin is excessively tight and leads to difficulties with urination or hygiene.

Circumcision can be performed at different stages of life, depending on the reasons for the procedure. In some cases, circumcision is done shortly after birth, usually within the first few days of life. In other cases, it may be done during childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.

The timing of circumcision depends on various factors, including cultural, religious, and personal preferences. In some cases, the decision to circumcise may also depend on medical reasons or considerations, such as the presence of certain health conditions or the need for surgical intervention. The decision regarding circumcision should ultimately be made after consulting with a medical professional who can provide advice that is tailored to the individual's specific circumstances and requirements

How is circumcision performed?

Prior to the procedure, the medical staff will clean and numb the penis using either a local anaesthetic injection or a numbing cream. They will then apply a clamp or ring to the penis to facilitate the removal of the foreskin by the doctor. After the procedure, the area will be treated with a topical antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly and wrapped in gauze.

For older boys and men, the procedure may be done under general anaesthetic to help them sleep throughout the procedure. When a newborn undergoes circumcision, the procedure typically takes between 5 to 10 minutes, while adult circumcision can take up to an hour. The length of the procedure may vary based on several factors, including the individual's medical history and age.
